Why The Party Never Stops In Majorca
May 31st is a date to watch out for in the Balearic heat: on or before, Plan B will arrive on a Holiday. And whilst the rap star is doubtlessly there to enjoy the sun, he won’t just be sending postcards home to everyone he’s ever known: he’s rather hoping that you’ll join him for his first ever Balearic gig in Majorca.
The Mallorca Rocks Festival will this year be headlined by Mr B himself. With a series of 17 massive Wednesday gigs, Mallorca Rocks is aiming to do for Majorca what Ibiza Rocks did for Ibiza. The many Balearic islands are truly party central, and established commercial festivals like this are a massive help to the local economy. The Ibiza Rocks revolution on the island meant not just diversity in the music scene, but regeneration for San Antonio. The hope is that Magaluf will also be revived, so book Villas in Puerto Pollensa, to see Plan B are the other rocking acts this summer. Last year, Biffy Clyro headlined the festival. But other acts have performed there, including Dizzee Rascal, Pendulum and The Kooks.
But the club music scene isn’t the definitive word on Festivals in Majorca, and there is so much more to the island than good music. Majorca has several traditional festivals every month that may tempt you into looking for villa holidays. Too many places centre their festivities around the summer. Winter in Majorca is a colourful sea of faces: the run up to Lent is a time of fancy dress, masquerade balls and carnival parades. In Palma Majorca, Sar Rua (The Cavalcade) is the most prominent of these events. Family friendly in the best sense of the word, this is a fancy dress spectacle of floats and enormous bonfires on an epic scale. In April, sailing fans will be drawn to the island for the Princess Sofia Trophy, a major yachting regatta. For everyone else though, there are feasts on the 2nd and 23rds (Sant Frecesc and Sant Jordi). The swelling tourist numbers have feasts and festivals to match, and the Majorcan people come out in force for these events. Emerging from your Apartments in Pollensa onto the streets of July and August, you will be met with a sophisticated street music festival with countless treats for the music connoisseur. These are the months of the Pollensa Festival, with jazz, world, traditional and classical music all on offer.
